Matt Le Tissier claimed that Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce will be desperate for Andy Carroll to get fit so he can unleash him as the forward could possibly lift the crowd.

The Sky Sports pundit shared that Carroll, due to being an old fan favourite, may be the only player who can make a difference to the atmosphere at St James Park.

Le Tissier then added that he didn’t think the atmosphere would get better at Newcastle until Mike Ashley leaves as there seems to be no other way out of their current situation.

“He’ll (Bruce) be desperate for Andy Carroll to get somewhere near match fitness, just to have someone there who could possibly lift the crowd,” said Le Tissier on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday (Sky Sports News, 13:16, Saturday, August 24th).

“An old fan favourite going back there, if he can get him fit and stay fit, he may just be the one player who can make a difference to the atmosphere in the stadium.

“However I agree with Charlie (Nicholas) as it looks like this situation will only be resolved when the owner leaves as there doesn’t seem to be any other way out.”

OPINION

Le Tissier is spot-on with his remarks on Carroll and Ashley. While Carroll is unlikely to be able to turn the most negative fan around, he will be able to put smiles back on fans’ faces if he gets fit and starts hitting the back of the net on a regular basis. The 30-year-old will not only be able to do this due to Newcastle fans simply wanting to see a prolific forward feature for their side but because he is a local lad who appears to have the club truly in his heart, so Newcastle supporters are rooting for him to do well on a personal level. However, getting Carroll fit is easier said than done. The Times previously reported that the forward was building up his fitness following ankle surgery in April, and was hoping to return to action against Liverpool after the international break. However, even if he returns to face the Reds, it will then be all about keeping him fit. The forward has suffered so many injuries that his injury profile on Transfermarkt spans two pages, and it’s worth noting his issues with his ankle have seen miss 345 days of action over the last two seasons.
