Ian Holloway shared he has a conversation with some Leeds United fans on Sunday and the general consensus was that they wanted their side to sign Newcastle United attacker Dwight Gayle.

The former QPR manager shared he was on the train with some Leeds fans, following Marcelo Bielsa’s side beating Bristol City 3-1 on Sunday and he ended up having a conversation about who should replace Kemar Roofe at the club.

“I asked them this question last night (Who should replace Roofe) as I was with some of them on the train,” said Holloway on talkSPORT (8:23am, Monday August 5th).

“The general consensus was maybe to try and get Dwight Gayle as he did it for Newcastle and he did it last season, so he seemed to be the name mentioned the most.”

Sky Sports stated that Roofe was close to leaving Leeds as he was currently undergoing a medical with Belgian club Anderlecht ahead of a proposed move to them.

OPINION

Is it any surprise a section of Leeds fans want Gayle to be Roofe’s replacement? Surely not. The Magpies forward has proven time and time again that he is a goal machine in the Championship. The 28-year-old has scored 59 goals in the 100 appearances he has made in the Championship during his career and has even managed to rack up 16 assists. Gayle also showed that he is an asset to any Championship side hoping for promotion to the Premier League last season as he helped fire West Bromwich Albion into the play-offs. The 28-year-old scored 24 goals in 40 Championship outings for WBA, including one game in the play-offs, and nearly helped get them into the top-flight. Gayle only played the first-leg of West Brom’s play-off Championship semi-final against Aston Villa due to picking up a yellow card and getting suspended for the second-leg. You wonder how much difference he could have made to the play-offs if he had featured in that match. However, while Leeds fans want Gayle to replace Roofe they will likely be disappointed. While Daily Star claimed Leeds were keen on the Magpies attacker, Steve Bruce hasn’t exactly got too many forwards to call upon so why would he sanction his exit?
