Joey Barton has taken to Twitter to send Andy Carroll a message after the striker re-signed for boyhood club Newcastle United.

The former West Ham striker confirmed his return to Tyneside shortly before the 5pm transfer deadline on Thursday, and Barton was quick to pass on his best wishes.

Writing on his personal account, he said: “All the best horse…”.

OPINION

This is a move that has already really captured the imagination of everybody associated with Newcastle, and you would have to say that it’s easy to see why. Carroll is a local lad, and he has the potential to be a real crowd-pleaser. He rejoins the club at an awkward time, given the uproar surrounding Mike Ashley’s ownership, but all things considered, this feels like the right thing for both club and player. Carroll can still strike fear into the heart of a centre-back like few others when he is fit, and even though he was ravaged by injuries last season, he still managed to win an impressive 9.1 aerial duels for every 90 minutes that he was actually on the pitch, as per Whoscored. As long as the Toon Army aren’t spending an arm and a leg on him being there then this feels like a good deal, and it could prove to be a very, very astute one too.
