Newcastle United winger Christian Atsu has been ruled out of Wednesday’s clash with Leicester City, according to Football Ghana.

The former Chelsea man came off the bench for Allan Saint-Maximin against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday – who is also sidelined from the Carabao Cup fixture – but won’t be reprising his role at St James’ Park.

Magpies head coach Steve Bruce has already revealed a number of injury doubts ahead of Wednesday, as noted in Football Ghana’s report, but Atsu has now seemingly been definitely ruled out.

OPINION

This is a blow to Newcastle’s chances against the Foxes, and make no mistake. Atsu isn’t a bonafide star man for Newcastle, but he is the type of quality squad player who would be expected to come in and start on Wednesday. With Saint-Maximin already expected to be missing after he limped off at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Atsu would have been expected to come in and replace the young Frenchman against Brendan Rodgers’ side. However, that will seemingly no longer be the case. Atsu is a Ghana international, of course, so you would think that Football Ghana may be accurate in what they are reporting, here. If they are, then Bruce will be missing a player who came on and excelled against Spurs at the weekend. Atsu got the assist for Joelinton’s winning goal, and looked lively apart from that, too. He would likely have given Leicester a torrid time, but, alas, that seemingly won’t happen now.
