Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles would be a good signing for Tottenham in the January transfer window, according to The Athletic journalist Jack Pitt-Brooke.

During a live Q&A session on The Athletic’s website on Tuesday afternoon, Pitt-Brooke was asked who would be one realistic player he would like to see Spurs sign in January.

He claimed that if Newcastle were in trouble by the time the winter transfer window comes around, the 25-year-old centre-back would be someone on his list.

“An experienced defender who can play out from the back: Jamaal Lascelles if Newcastle are heading down? Tyrone Mings if Villa are? There must be good CBs in foreign leagues I don’t know much about,” Pitt-Brooke said.

OPINION

Tottenham can sign better centre-backs than Lascelles but there is no denying that he is a player who Mauricio Pochettino could realistically sign in the January transfer window. Lascelles does tick quite a few boxes. He is a good player for a team that could get relegated this season, he is only 25-years-old, he has three years’ worth of captaincy experience and is English. Tottenham could do with adding home-grown players to their squad and if Lascelles is eager to move away from St James’ Park in January – no one can blame him if he did – then it would not be a shock to see Spurs linked with a move for the former Nottingham Forest man. He would not be first-choice in North London unless one of Toby Alderweireld or Jan Vertonghen left but would still be a good player to add some strength in depth to Pochettino’s centre-back options.
