Newcastle United should pause their reported pursuit of Brazilian attacker Marrony as their chances of getting a work permit sound slim.
Globo Esporte previously reported that the Magpies’ transfer chief Steve Nickson had been impressed by the 20-year-old forward after watching him numerous times.
The news outlet claimed that the Magpies could bid for Marrony as a result with his club Vasco De Gama perhaps being willing to sell him for below £31.4million, which is the release clause his current contract, due to financial problems.
However, Tim Vickery who is the South American Football expert for Sky Sports seemed to think Marrony would struggle to get a work permit in order to allow him to play in England.
“The reason Richarlison managed to get one, he had U-20s Brazil experience when Watford signed him, was on salary grounds,” said the Sky Sports football expert on talkSPORT (15:39, Wednesday, July 24th).
“Watford were paying him a lot of money and can’t imagine that Marrony would command that sort of salary.
“So at the moment with this one, I can’t see where he would possibly get a work permit.”
It makes sense that Marrony would struggle to get a work permit as he has never been capped by Brazil, at senior or U-20s level, and Vickery is probably right to think that Newcastle wouldn’t be willing to offer him a huge pay packet.

Marrony has never played his football outside of Brazil and it’s hard to know if he’d be able to make the jump to England and do well, especially considering he is still very young.
So with that in mind, given that there must be something about him for Nickson to be impressed, Newcastle should pause their pursuit of the Brazilian right now and just keep tabs on him until he is in a position where a work permit is more likely.
