Richard Keys claimed that he had heard that Newcastle United had paid Sheffield Wednesday £2.5million in order to attain the services of Steve Bruce.

The television presenter claimed the Magpies had also paid a little more than £2.5million in order for Bruce’s coaches Stephen Clemence and Steve Agnew to follow the 58-year-old to St James Park.

Keys stated that he thought Bruce’s buy out figure in his contract was £2.5million, so was not sure what the problem is.

“Hearing that Steve Bruce’s ‘buy out’ figure of £2.5m was met by Newcastle – plus a little bit more for Clemence and Agnew,” wrote Keys on his verified Twitter account.

“On that basis, I don’t know what the problem is.”

OPINION

Sheffield Wednesday released a statement on Wednesday, via their official website, that they were considering taking legal action against the Magpies as there were outstanding issues to be sorted with Newcastle over them poaching Bruce, Clemence and Agnew.  However, if Keys is correct with what he has heard then it’s unclear why the Championship club are so up in arms. If Bruce had a buyout clause in his contract and the Magpies simply paid it, then there should be no issue. However, given that Sheffield Wednesday went as far as to release an official statement teasing legal action over Bruce then you have to question where Keys is getting his information from. While Keys isn’t the most popular figure among Newcastle fans, Magpies supporters should be hoping that he is right with what he is tweeting on this occasion, as the last thing the club needs is a distracting off-the-field legal battle.
