Rio Ferdinand sent a message to Newcastle United attacker Jacob Murphy on Instagram after the 24-year-old shared a snap of himself in pre-season.

The Magpies winger posted a picture of himself on Instagram feeling the heat while training in China and captioned the picture to claim he was pushing himself harder each day alongside his teammates.

“Another scorcher in China, pushing harder each day with the lads !” wrote Murphy via his verified Instagram account.

Murphy showing off that he was putting the work in during pre-season then led to Ferdinand sending him a one-word message, via his Instagram account, that simply said “graft.”

OPINION

Graft? In the picture that Murphy shared all he is doing is splashing water over himself to be able to cope with the heat, it’s not exactly the most action-packed picture the Magpies player could have posted. While the Instagram snap does appear to be Murphy’s way off showing off his legs, as you can visibly see his veins, surely he would have been better off showcasing a picture of himself in action? After all the 24-year-old has a lot to prove to Newcastle fans and Steve Bruce this season. Murphy featured 25 times in the Premier League in his 2017/18 campaign and looked out of his depth. The winger only averaged a match rating of 6.29 and had a disappointingly low pass completion rate as it was 66.5% (Source: WhoScored). Murphy didn’t improve much in his 2018/19 campaign either. The 24-year-old made nine Premier League outings, sustaining an average rating of 6.25, and was loaned out to Championship side West Bromwich Albion in January. Despite stepping down a level, Murphy still didn’t wow like he should have. The winger may have managed two goals and one assist in his 15 outings for the Baggies, but his average rating across his Championship outings was 6.50. He also still had a rather low pass completion rate as it was 65.1% in his latest campaign.
