Newcastle United footballers Jonjo Shelvey and Karl Darlow were involved in a 3 a.m. bust-up outside a Northumberland pizza shop, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claims that the two Englishmen were involved in an altercation where someone was kicked and punched after alopecia-sufferer Shelvey was allegedly called a ‘bald c***’ as he bought a pizza.

The Mail’s report then states that the England international responded by telling them to ‘Go back to your council house, you peasant’’.

Darlow then appears to kick a man who was lying on the ground after punches were thrown. Video of the incident is included in the Mail’s report.

OPINION

Well, this isn’t what anyone connected with Newcastle United needs at what is already an incredibly traumatic and divisive time for the club. Obviously altercations do happen sometimes, particularly when people have had a drink and it’s 3 a.m. However, when you are a footballer, you simply need to rise above this sort of thing. It must be said, though, that in the video shown in the Mail’s report, Shelvey himself doesn’t appear to get physical. Darlow, though, does look like he throws a kick in the direction of one of the alleged abusers. There is no audio in the clip so it’s difficult to know the truth about what was allegedly said. However, if Shelvey was called what it’s said he was called, then he has every right to react angrily. It would make sense for him to respond in an aggressive way but, again, you have to be more sensible when you’re a footballer in the public eye. Simply put, both Magpies stars should have removed themselves from the situation immediately once it began to get heated. Still, it’s done now and we will have to wait and see if there are any consequences for the two players.
