OPINION

Time is precious in the summer transfer window, especially now that it closes part way through August. It is absolutely imperative that sides get off to a good start, identify their targets early, and try and establish as much stability as possible early on to ensure a smooth and successful start to the new season. Newcastle United have, predictably, done none of those things. Instead, in a policy that feels increasingly like a dystopian social experiment, the Magpies have failed to tie down Rafa Benitez, have not found a replacement as yet, and look set to sell one of their most talented attacking players, with Ayoze Perez on the cusp of joining Leicester City, as reported by Sky Sports News. And now, with the first team squad due back tomorrow, it falls to academy coaches Ben Dawson and Neil Redfearn to take the reins as they look to prepare for the new campaign, as reported by Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie. In fairness, this isn’t the worst thing in the world. Both are respected coaches more than capable of run-in a few training sessions while the club search for a permanent boss. The time to worry, however, is if we get a fortnight or so down the line and they are still in charge. At this rate, you wouldn’t bet against it.
