Former England cricketer Graham Onions has taken to Twitter to blast talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan over his comments on Rafa Benitez’s departure from Newcastle United.

The Spaniard has left Tyneside after failing to agree terms on a new deal with the Magpies, and Jordan has spoken out on the manager, claiming that he is not a fan and that Rafa only left because he couldn’t get what he wanted whenever he wanted it.

But Onions, who was born just over the Tyne in Gateshead, has been quick to dispute the claims.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, he said: “Ah Simon, I’m no expert but can’t help but think you’re wrong.”

OPINION

Onions surely speaks for the vast majority of Newcastle United fans on this one. Yes, the Toon Army adored Benitez, and rightly so, but their fans are far too knowledgable and pragmatic to be blinded by admiration. There is a reason that they backed Rafa, and there is a reason why Mike Ashley is disliked so much. Benitez didn’t want the world, he just wanted a chance to compete. Instead, he was constantly met with resistance from an owner whose primary intention seems to be to line his own pockets. Yes, the Magpies broke their transfer record in January, but it was a record that has stood since 2005, two years before Ashley bought the club. Accusations will be levelled at Rafa based purely on the fact that he has gone and joined a Chinese club who will pay him a king’s ransom every week, but that shouldn’t distract from the fact that Mike Ashley has taken him and the Geordie faithful for a ride.
