Newcastle United are ready to make an official approach to hire Sheffield Wednesday’s Steve Bruce as their next manager, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claims that the 58-year-old is the Magpies’ top target to succeed Rafa Benitez at St James’ Park and the compensation fee to hire the Owls boss could be around £1million.

It is understood that Newcastle will make a move for the former Sunderland manager in the coming days before they jet out to China on Saturday as they continue preparations ahead of the upcoming season.

The Sun also adds that Mike Ashley could even meet with Bruce ahead of hiring him.

OPINION

Newcastle fans are not going to enjoy this news. Not only is Bruce someone who has managed Sunderland in the past but he is also seen as someone who only really manages teams who struggle in the Premier League and the last time he was at a big club, he was sacked by Aston Villa mid-way through a promotion-winning season. Bruce has done well at Sheffield Wednesday since he was hired by the Yorkshire club in the winter, but there’s a massive step up from them to work at Newcastle, where things are a complete mess at the moment. It’s a surprise to see Ashley be prepared to pay a compensation fee for a manager who’s currently in work rather than go for someone who is unemployed, but clearly they see Bruce as the right man to come along and stop them from getting relegated next season. Unfortunately, that is the state that Newcastle United are in right now.
