Newcastle United are not close to signing any new players, according to Chronicle journalist Mark Douglas.

The North-East reporter claimed via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday afternoon that the Magpies had set their sights on signing two new players before the weekend.

However it is understood that Newcastle’s transfer business could now be drawn out until the very end of the window, which slams shut next Thursday.

OPINION

Newcastle need new signings as soon as possible because it is now just a week to go before the summer transfer window slams shut and Joelinton is the only player who has been added to Steve Bruce’s first-team squad. Newcastle need players in almost every area except for at centre-back or in goals, unless Martin Dubravka makes a shock exit. Newcastle have numbers in some areas like at right-back but they lack quality there while left-back is in a similar state. With Isaac Hayden and Jonjo Shelvey looking as though they’re going to stay, the centre of midfield might not be a priority area to strengthen unless Sean Longstaff leaves. However Mohamed Diame did leave at the end of last season and Ki Sung-yueng wasn’t the best in his debut campaign at St James’ Park. Newcastle’s attack has some good players like Miguel Almiron, Joelinton and Matt Ritchie, but away from them, the quality drops off. It’s going to be a big week for Newcastle fans. Let’s hope Bruce can get some deals done.
