OPINION

Newcastle United have still got a fair bit of work to do in the current transfer window. Whereas some board members at other Premier League clubs are reaching for the pipe and slippers as deadline day begins to roll over the horizon, the Toon Army appear to be going into the remainder of the window with the chaotic energy of a man buying all of his festive gifts on Christmas Eve. Perhaps panic hasn’t quite set in yet, but it’s certainly starting to rear its ugly head. And there have been a gluttony of names linked with a move to Tyneside in recent days. One that is perhaps a little surprising, however, is that of Rangers captain James Tavernier, as reported by the Daily Mail. The full-back used to be a United player, but never really made an impression on Tyneside, and has only really found himself since making the move north of the border. You will struggle to find a defender anywhere with more eye-catching stats than 17 goals and 20 assists last season, but there is plenty to suggest that this deal won’t go through. For one thing, the Toon Army need to prioritise signing a left-back, not a right-back. If they were to lose Paul Dummett, they would be in serious trouble. Moreover, Steve Bruce has sought to quell talks of a move for Tavernier, claiming that he doesn’t know where the rumour came from, as quoted by the Chronicle. Nonetheless, there are certainly a fair few Toon fans hoping that he changes his mind and readies a raid for the former man.
