There is no hiding the fact that Newcastle United are low in options as it stands, with the club only making one signing in the form of striker Joelinton. With Steve Bruce being reported by the Telegraph to be interested in strengthening five positions at the Magpies, it is bound to be a busy two weeks before the start of the Premier League. Newcastle were reported by the Sun to be lining up a £5million offer for Everton midfielder James McCarthy on Sunday morning, with Bruce suggested to be keen on a move for the Irish international. The move for the holding midfielder would make no sense, with the 28-year-old struggling to make an impact at Goodison Park over previous years, mainly down to injury. McCarthy only featured for 19 minutes last season, and only managed to make four league appearances the season before [Source: Transfermarkt] – which is more proof that McCarthy is not ready to make the move to St James’ Park and make any sort of impact.
