According to Irish news outlet Pundit Arena, Newcastle United are one of a number of clubs that are in pursuit of centre-forward Jonathan Afolabi, who is a free agent after being released by Southampton at the end of last season. The 19-year-old is yet to earn a single senior appearance in his career but has decent potential and could be a good addition to the Magpies’ Under-23s squad ahead of the new campaign. Some Newcastle fans on Twitter are joking about the fact that even Mike Ashley would find the free agent too expensive while others don’t appear to be happy with the club looking at potential players for the future. Why not? While the Newcastle first-team is a state and needs improving as soon as possible, there’s no reason why the club still can’t sign players for the Under-23s who might come good in the future. Eyeing up Afolabi does not mean that someone isn’t eyeing up signings for the senior squad. It’s hard to do because of how bad things are at St James’ Park, but some fans just need to be a bit more relaxed about certain transfer rumours.
