OPINION

The ongoing manager hunt at Newcastle United looks set to come to a disappointing end, to say the least. After missing out on candidates such as Steven Gerrard and Patrick Vieira, Mike Ashley seemed to take a different approach in his hunt to replace Rafael Benitez. Instead of looking for younger managers that could take the reigns at St James’ Park, Ashley seemed to look to Sheffield Wednesday boss Steve Bruce. It would be a bizarre appointment, to say the least, with the Championship managers’ greatest achievement being an FA Cup semi-final, compared to the illustrious career of Benitez. Bruce confirmed in an interview with Sky Sports that he held talks with Newcastle, simply saying: “I’ve had a conversation, yes.” The 58-year-old enjoyed a great playing career at Manchester United before his attempt to replicate that success as a manager in top-flight took a turn for the worst. The Owls’ boss is one of only two managers to have managed over 250 games in the Premier League and have a win percentage under 30%. Many Newcastle fans took to Twitter to respond with anger over Bruce’s interview confirming the links with one saying: “He will not last five minutes on Tyneside, we don’t want him.”
