Newcastle fans react to away kit unveiling

OPINION

There hasn’t been a great deal for Newcastle United fans to get excited about this summer, what with Rafa Benitez moving to China and Mike Ashley refusing to budge from behind his barricade in the boardroom at St. James’ Park. In times like this, with chaos reigning and disappointment the default emotion on Tyneside, you have to look for the little things that can act as silver linings to the hulking great clouds that have taken up residency in the north east. The signing of Joelinton earlier in the week was one, and today’s unveiling of the Magpies’ new away kit should be another. Now, obviously, a shirt doesn’t make up for the shambolic ownership of the club, nor will it magically bring Benitez back to the dugout, but if you’re going to descend into crisis, you might as well look good while you do so. And this kit is a real corker. Puma don’t always get it right, but with this dark, bottle green number, they are on the money. A smart colour, complimented by a patterned upper third that doesn’t try too hard to be edgy or cool, this is the kind of shirt that will be worn on the terraces for years to come. Or at least it would be if buying it didn’t directly line Mike Ashley’s pockets.
