OPINION
Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has reportedly rejected the chance to become the next Newcastle United manager and it refreshing to see that there are some Magpies fans on Twitter who do not blame the Liverpool legend for turning down the role. According to the Mirror, the 38-year-old has rejected an approach from Mike Ashley over the vacancy at St James’ Park after Rafa Benitez left at the end of his contract last month. Gerrard did well in his first season as Rangers manager as he secured a second-placed finish – their highest finish since administration in 2012 – and reached the Europa League group stages. It seems inevitable that if Gerrard continues to do well in Scotland that he will head back to England, but there’s no way he would be doing that when Newcastle are the team interested in him. You cannot blame Gerrard, or any manager who’s currently employed, for rejecting the chance to manage in the circus that is St James’ Park at the moment. Newcastle fans can see that, which suggests that Ashley will only be able to convince an unemployed manager to succeed Benitez in the Tyneside hotseat.
