Mark Douglas was the bearer of bad news on Wednesday afternoon as the Chronicle journalist claimed via his personal Twitter account that Newcastle United are not close to signing any new players and could end up doing their business close to the end of the summer transfer window. Since the end of last season, Brazilian forward Joelinton has been the only player signed up by the Magpies while several first-team players have left. Newcastle’s squad is down to the bare bones and it is no shock to see so many fans in meltdown after seeing the latest update on their transfer business. Why is everything always left so late? Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley took too long to clarify Rafa Benitez’s future, then took too long to hire Steve Bruce and are still dawdling over business despite the season kicking off next week. Signing players late in the window is such a massive risk because you’re basically feeding off scraps and leftovers. Newcastle will never change under Ashley. He simply has to go.
