Steve Bruce is looking to make Everton pair Yannick Bolasie and James McCarthy his first two Newcastle United signings, according to 90min.

The online football outlet claim that Bruce will reignite interest in the pair after he managed to sign Bolasie on loan at Aston Villa.

90min report that the duo would jump at the chance to sign for Newcastle, with Bruce keen to take advantage of the budget made available to him should he take charge at St James’ Park.

Marco Silva has reportedly made both Bolasie and McCarthy available this summer after both failed to make an impact at Goodison Park in the previous couple of seasons.

OPINION

Steve Bruce is already stamping his authority down at Newcastle United, before even being placed in charge at the club. Many Newcastle fans will have been surely hoping for more than this slightly disappointing news, especially after they failed to make an impact at Everton. Bruce must be stopped in his tracks, with the Toffees’ pair, not the answer. McCarthy struggled through injury last season and only managed 14 minutes in the Premier League – only proving it would take him more than pre-season to return to peak performance level. Bolasie also hasn’t made much of an impact in the top-flight in recent years, spending a loan spell in the Championship and also a temporary spell in Belgium with Anderlecht. Bolasie made 17 appearances in Belgium, and only managed to score six goals – a stat that is decent but at a level that’s lower than the English top-flight. If the Magpies want to improve on last seasons’ progress, they need to push forward, and signing players that have failed at fellow Premier League clubs is definitely not the answer.
