Newcastle United are closing in on signing another forward, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper claim on their website that the Magpies are in talks with a second striker and a deal could be confirmed before their third pre-season game against Preston on Saturday.

The Chronicle reports that Steve Bruce and Lee Charnley were both at St James’ Park as the club confirmed the club-record signing of Joelinton, the first of many deals they hope to complete this window.

Bruce has been reported by the Telegraph to be wanting to strengthen five areas of his squad this summer, with two strikers, a full-back, a winger, and a central midfielder all on the agenda.

OPINION

It appears that Newcastle have finally sprung into action over the past couple of days. After sanctioning a club-record fee for Joelinton, Mike Ashley looks set to back Bruce well and truly in the transfer market. It would be great news for all involved should the Magpies be able to complete a signing for another striker before Saturday, as it would give both the player, who remains unnamed, and Bruce the most amount of time to prepare for the start of the new Premier League season. There was no doubting that Newcastle needed at least two strikers, with their two top-scorers last season, Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon, combining for more than 50% of the club’s total goal tally. This will give all of Newcastle’s fans a massive boost as well as they will finally be given something to cheer for, after years of Ashley not particularly opening his chequebook as frequently as the fans would like in the North East. The rebuilding stage is finally underway at St James’ Park, and Bruce must get going quick.
