Jose Mourinho is closing in on a return to management with Newcastle United, according to El Gol Digital.

The Spanish news outlet claims that Mourinho has the option to succeed Rafa Benitez at St James’ Park however the ex-Chelsea boss wants certain assurances that he can make top-class signings and freedom in the transfer market.

It is understood that if Mourinho does arrive on Tyneside that Joselu, who was handed his Real Madrid debut by the Portuguese boss, could pull the plug on his move to Alaves in La Liga.

El Gol Digital reports that Joselu believes Mourinho is one of the best coaches in the world and might want to stay at Newcastle should the former Madrid boss head to the North-East.

OPINION

Mourinho is a world-class manager. Although he was criticised for his style of play at Manchester United and was eventually sacked by the Red Devils in December, the Portuguese boss is still someone who has won two Champions League crowns, one Europa League and multiple league titles in England, Spain, Italy and Portugal. Mourinho is currently the best manager in the world who is without a club. It’s very hard to see him join Newcastle. Not only would Mike Ashley have to offer him a lot of money in wages, he would also have to bow to his demands over transfers – something which clearly wasn’t done with Benitez. Also, why would Mourinho want to keep Joselu? Yes, the Spanish forward might want to cancel his move to Alaves if Mourinho does arrive at St James’ Park, but a manager as good as him can see the Joselu is nowhere near good enough for most Championship sides, let alone a Premier League one.
