Championship heavyweights Leeds United have set their sights on securing Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow if they can offload number one Kiko Casilla this summer, according to Football Insider.

The outlet claims that Marcelo Bielsa’s side are looking to sell the former Real Madrid shot-stopper just six months after signing him from the Spanish giants.

Bielsa is thought to have drawn up a list of new ‘keepers with director of football Victor Orta, with the 28-year-old Magpies man featuring high up that list.

The former Nottingham Forest man almost made the move to Elland Road in January, before Leeds swooped for Casilla. Now, though, he could finally make the switch to the Whites.

OPINION

This seems like a move that makes sense for all parties, even if Leeds’s decision to potentially move on from Casilla just six months after signing him doesn’t particularly bode well for whoever takes his place in Yorkshire. Darlow’s time would very much appear to be up on Tyneside, and has been for a while now. He is a decent ‘keeper, there’s no doubt about that, but he’s nothing special and isn’t the type of guy you would want as your undisputed number one in the Premier League. However, he is a top class Championship stopper, and will likely be first choice if he makes the move to Elland Road. Clearly he’s not going to get much game time behind Martin Dubravka at St James’ Park, while his departure would also give more opportunities to Newcastle youngster Freddie Woodman. So this is a transfer that would appear to work for all parties involved. Let’s get it sorted then, shall we?
