Labour MP Ian Lavery has urged Newcastle United fans to hit Mike Ashley in the pocket by boycotting St James’ Park for the Magpies’ clash against Arsenal next month.

To say that Newcastle fans are fed up with the leadership of Ashley would be an understatement with the club close to starting their 2019/20 campaign without a manager and without any new signings made.

Wansbeck MP Lavery is in support of the Newcastle fans’ movement as he believes that it’s the only thing that will get Ashley to pay attention.

“What I would say to people is don’t give up, we’ve got to campaign for this great club of ours,” said Lavery, as quoted by the Morning Star.

“We will have to take some action at some stage, because the likes of Mike Ashley, believe me, only listen to one thing and that is finances.

“If we don’t hit Mike Ashley in the backside pocket this will continue.”

OPINION

Newcastle are probably in the biggest mess that they have ever been in under Ashley’s leadership and at the moment they have to be considered as a team that could get relegated from the Premier League next season. Ashley has failed to keep Rafa Benitez as manager, has let key players from last season like Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon leave and there doesn’t appear to be a shred of hope that the prosed takeover is taking place. Newcastle could be one of the teams that knocks on the door of the top-six next season if Ashley spent some money and unleashed the potential of one of the biggest clubs in English football. Instead he’s happy to be mediocre, to make money and treat the football club like a business. The sooner Ashley is gone, the better and Lavery is right to back fans to boycott St James’ Park next month. If Ashley stops making money from Newcastle then he will want to sell up.
