Hoffenheim striker Joelinton could undergo a medical at Newcastle United today (Thursday), according to Chronicle journalist Mark Douglas.

The reporter was asked on Wednesday night whether the 22-year-old’s move to Newcastle had reached the stage where he’d be having a medical.

Douglas claimed via his personal Twitter account that the medical may take place on Thursday, adding that a fee between Newcastle and Hoffenheim could have been agreed a long time ago.

Newcastle are the only team in the Premier League who have not made a new signing so far this summer, but it would seem that Joelinton is on the cusp of completing a £36.2million [Kicker] switch to St James’ Park to become the first addition of Steve Bruce’s managerial reign.

OPINION

Newcastle fans have to be happy with Joelinton. Although the Brazilian didn’t have an amazing goalscoring record at Hoffenheim last season – he scored 11 times in 35 total appearances – just the fact that Mike Ashley is finally willing to spend some money on transfers is at least a boost. Newcastle’s net spend is still likely to be lower than anyone else’s in the Premier League as the Tyneside club has already sold off players like Ayoze Perez and Joselu for a combined total of just over £30million. They might not be the only players to leave St James’ Park for a fee this summer with Sean Longstaff linked with Manchester United, so this move for Joelinton is hardly a sign that Ashley is digging into his own pocket to fund a move. At least the club is now pressing on with signing players and Joelinton is 22-years-old, so could be someone who makes the club a profit in the future. All that Newcastle fans will care about next season is whether or not he can fill the void left by Salomon Rondon. That remains to be seen, but let’s hope that the Brazilian is someone who can do wonders on Tyneside.
