Newcastle United’s swoop to sign Hoffenheim striker Joelinton is “progressing”, according to Sky Sports News host Jim White.

Hoffenheim have confirmed that the 22-year-old striker is in talks with a Premier League club and White has revealed a text message, from someone involved in the negotiations, that the Magpies are closing in on the Brazilian.

“I’m just getting a message tonight. Joelinton to Newcastle is progressing. That’s from someone who’s close to this deal tonight,” said White, live on Sky Sports News on Wednesday night.

Joelinton missed Hoffenheim’s pre-season friendly against Jahn Regensburg on Wednesday and could be on his way to Newcastle in a mammoth deal worth £36.2million [Kicker].

OPINION

It seems like Steve Bruce’s appointment as Newcastle manager has opened the door for the club to finally push on with signing players. Newcastle are the only team in the Premier League to not sign a new player so far this summer so it is imperative that they get their business done as quickly as possible, as the new season is drawing closer and closer. Joelinton is a good young striker. Last season he scored 11 goals and supplied nine assists in 35 appearances across all competitions for Hoffenheim. Salomon Rondon’s record last term wasn’t too dissimilar to that, and the Venezuelan is someone who is seven years older and has had more time to adapt to life in English football. Joelinton might not hit the ground running in the same way that Rondon didn’t at West Brom. However with some patience and good coaching, he should be able to improve on his goalscoring record from Germany.
