Liam Gibson has joined Grimsby Town on loan until January, Newcastle United have confirmed.

The Magpies announced via their official website and official Twitter account on Tuesday evening that the 22-year-old has completed a temporary move to Blundell Park and will return to Tyneside on January 4 2020.

Gibson has never made a senior appearance for Newcastle but the left-back was an unused substitute for the Magpies in their 1-0 win against West Brom in the Premier League in February 2016.

OPINION

Hopefully Gibson can make use of this loan move to Grimsby and feature a lot more heavily than he did while on loan at Accrington Stanley last season. Gibson joined Accrington in January but only featured five times in League One in what was a fairly wasted loan move for the young defender. Gibson wasn’t the only youngster who was loaned out last season and didn’t play much as Elias Sorensen, Jamie Sterry and Cal Roberts all endured tough temporary spells away from St James’ Park. Shola Ameobi has since been appointed the loans manager at St James’ Park and fans will hope that the ex-Magpies forward’s return to Tyneside can lead to players making more out of their loan spells. It was pointless sending players like Gibson, Sterry and Sorensen on loan last season because they barely played and they might as well have stayed put in the North-East and played for the Under-23s. Playing youth football can only take you so far though and hopefully Gibson can play regularly and return to Newcastle a better player when his loan at Grimsby ends in the winter.
