Ex-Lyon boss Bruno Genesio is on Tyneside and could become the new Newcastle United manager, according to Le Progres.

The French newspaper claims that Genesio, 52, might sign a four-year deal with the Magpies to become Rafa Benitez’s successor at St James’ Park after the Spaniard left the North-East club last month.

Genesio is available after he left Lyon at the end of last season.

The Frenchman spent four years in charge of the Ligue 1 giants, who finished third in the league last season.

OPINION

Where has this come from? Genesio has been linked with Newcastle for the last few months but in the last few days, it has seemed as though no one but Steve Bruce is in line to become Benitez’s successor at St James’ Park. Genesio’s name is constantly coming up in the French media as someone who could be the next Newcastle boss, but on most occasions, those reports have been shot down by the local press. Genesio did a decent job at Lyon and given that most of the Newcastle fans aren’t happy with Bruce’s reportedly imminent appointment, the Toon Army might prefer a move for the Frenchman. He is a loyal manager who worked well with younger players at Lyon. Houssem Aouar and Nabil Fekir are two stars of Lyon that have risen to prominence under Genesio’s management while Moussa Dembele, Memphis Depay and Bertrand Traore have also shone under his watch. Genesio’s a decent manager and could be a riskier, yet more exciting appointment than Bruce.
