Adrian Durham shared he never thought he would be calling Steve Bruce the manager of Newcastle United.

The broadcaster, who was on holiday when the Magpies appointed the 58-year-old boss, shared his surprise over the appointment before reminding Darren Gough of how he previously suggested that Manchester United hire Bruce.

“That’s the Newcastle manager Steve Bruce (laughs), I never thought I’d say that,” said Durham on talkSPORT (16:34, Wednesday, July 24th).

“And that happened while I was away for three and half weeks, and actually I must say to you before we get into Newcastle, he’s talking about their record signing Joelinton, but do you remember when you said Steve Bruce to Manchester United and pretty much everyone laughed?

“He’s now in the Premier League with Newcastle United.”

Gough previously claimed on talkSPORT that Manchester United should consider hiring Bruce to succeed Jose Mourinho, a suggestion he stands by, and Durham claimed Gough’s past remarks on Bruce were now justified with the manager back in the Premier League with the Magpies.

“When he was appointed, Steve Bruce, it did make me… I thought of you straight away, and I just thought everything you said was justified,” added Durham.

OPINION

When Gough suggested Man United hire Bruce on a temporary basis, Durham was in disbelief and that shows how he truly feels about the manager. The broadcaster seemed on the brink of saying he laughed about the Magpies hiring Bruce, and surely that implies he doesn’t think the manager is the right fit for the Magpies. Given Bruce’s record in the Premier League, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he felt like this. The manager may be experienced in the top-flight, having managed only 250 games in the division, he has a woeful win rate of under 30% (Source: Duncan Alexander, on Twitter). While every manager deserves a clean slate upon taking over a new club, it is hard to get excited about Bruce’s appointment. This is the case even though the Magpies have broken their transfer record by paying £40million to sign Joelinton from Hoffenheim (Source: BBC). Normally when a club spends big on a player, who could possibly be a huge boost them, everyone’s expectations rise but with Bruce in charge, it doesn’t seem like people around St James Park are anymore confident about the upcoming season.
