Newcastle United midfielder Issac Hayden is set to perform a dramatic U-turn and stay at the club this summer, according to journalist Luke Edwards.

The Daily Telegraph’s north east football correspondent revealed the news on his personal Twitter account on Tuesday, claiming that the 24-year-old is now set to remain at St James’ Park.

Edwards himself had previously reported in his newspaper that the former Arsenal man was determined to depart Tyneside this summer to be closer to his young family down south.

However, he has now delivered an update: “So doesn’t look like my holiday has officially started yet so on top of revealing Joelinton signing last week it’s worth me passing on news that it looks like Isaac Hayden will be staying at #nufc.”

OPINION

This is absolutely phenomenal news for the Toon Army. Hayden was one of Newcastle’s best players over the second half of last season after coming into the team around the turn of the year, first forming a terrific midfield partnership with youngster Sean Longstaff, and then holding down the fort after his injury alongside a revolving cast of midfield partners. However, it’s been well-known for over a year now that the former Gunner wanted to leave the north east to be closer to his young daughter and fiancé in the south of the country. So what’s changed in that regard? Has he found a better domestic situation, perhaps they’ve moved closer to him? That’s not for us to know, though, and frankly it’s none of our business. To be quite honest, the Newcastle supporters won’t care one bit what the reason is. They’ll just be happy that one of their most reliable players is seemingly ready to remain where he is.
