Michael Chopra has hit out at Richard Keys after the broadcaster claimed that Newcastle United couldn’t have chosen a better manager than Steve Bruce.

It was confirmed on Wednesday that Bruce will be the next Newcastle manager, much to the displeasure of fans who are furious with the lack of ambition shown by owner Mike Ashley in the wake of Rafa Benitez’s departure last month.

Ex-Sky Sports host Keys has long been a cheerleader for Ashley but former Newcastle striker Chopra was quick to fire back at him on Twitter for his verdict on Bruce’s appointment.

“Are you crazy!? Bruce with a 29% win ratio in the Premier League and Mike Ashley with a net spend of under £5million in 12 years. Seems like the clubs going places, Richard,” said Chopra via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday.

OPINION

It’s hard to see how Newcastle couldn’t have chosen a better manager. Keys just seems to be saying the things he does about Newcastle on Twitter because he knows it provokes a reaction and gets his name out there in the English media because he’s stuck working in the Middle East now. Bruce is such a poor appointment for Newcastle, but then again, the Magpies would have been unable to hire anyone better in their situation because the club is an absolute shambles at the moment. Ashley’s leadership has led to Newcastle being in a situation where they are among the favourites to be relegated next season. If the club isn’t relegated, it will surely just because there are three worse teams than them, not because they deserve to stay up. Everything surrounding Newcastle since the end of last season has absolutely stunk. Salomon Rondon, Ayoze Perez and Benitez have gone. No new players have been signed and a manager from a mid-table Championship club has been appointed. Newcastle could be a team that finishes regularly in the top-half. Now, they’ll be lucky to finish mid-table.
