Andy Carroll is keen to return to boyhood club Newcastle United, according to the Chronicle.
The 6’4″ striker [Transfermarkt] has been without a club since leaving West Ham earlier this summer, and has been recovering from an ongoing ankle injury.
But the Chronicle suggests that the big Geordie has been given the green light to find a new team by doctors after a period of recovery, and also claim that the prospect of working with Steve Bruce appeals to him.

Bringing Carroll back would be a big risk, make no mistake. The 30-year-old made just four starts for West Ham last season, and just 14 appearances overall. His career has been blighted by injuries, and Transfermarkt list him as having 17 separate periods on the sidelines with various complaints since 2008. In truth, that might even be an optimistic estimation. If, however, he can stay fit, then Carroll can still have a lot to offer a side. The big man won a colossal 9.1 aerial duels per 90 minutes for West Ham last season, as per Whoscored, and there are still very few players who can cause the kind of havoc and wanton chaos that he can in a penalty area. Ultimately, it will come down to cost. If the Magpies can bring him in on a low enough wage, or even on some kind of pay-as-you-play deal, this could be a masterstroke. If not, they could be left with a very expensive ornament to admire.
