There are two key members of staff whom Steve Bruce would likely bring with him to Newcastle United were he appointed, according to the Northern Echo.

The newspaper claims that the current Sheffield Wednesday boss would probably like to bring Stephen Clemence and former Middlesbrough number two Steve Agnew with him to St James’ Park.

The Magpies head to China to take part in the Premier League Asia Trophy on Saturday, and an approach for Bruce’s services is expected before then.

Newcastle are thought to have turned their attention to the Owls chief after failing to make headway in moves for Rangers’ Steven Gerrard, Nice’s Patrick Vieira and Belgium’s Roberto Martinez.

OPINION

Apparently we are so deep into Steve Bruce territory that we are already wondering who he is going to bring to Newcastle as his members of staff. That seems a bit far-fetched, doesn’t it? Look, the Wednesday boss has clearly emerged as the front-runner to become the Magpies’ next manager, but that doesn’t mean he’d be a good appointment. Decidedly not. Look, Agnew is experienced, he has been around the block. If Bruce does come to Newcastle then Agnew would be a fantastic appointment as his number two. It would be smart and it would put the team in safe hands ready for next season. However, the majority of the Magpies supporters are likely hoping that some spanner appears in the works and that Bruce doesn’t end up taking the job. Going from Rafael Benitez to Steve Bruce, with all due respect, is like trading in your Ferrari for a Fiat Punto. Still, this does appear to be the direction we’re heading in.
