’s new manager wants to keep in-demand midfielder at the club, according to the Northern Echo.

The newspaper claims that the new boss is determined to retain the 21-year-old’s services, despite the interest of giants in him.

Keeping the Englishman is thought to be high on Bruce’s agenda after his appointment, despite being informed that Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to work with the £30million-rated star.

The youngster made just nine first team appearances for the north east heavyweights last time out, but seemingly did enough to attract United’s attention.

This is exactly what the Newcastle supporters will have wanted to hear, although they will no doubt retain a healthy sense of skepticism as far as the youngster’s future is concerned. The on Tyneside have already seen their beloved former manager Rafael  depart this summer, and to lose Longstaff as well would likely render them inconsolable. However, it certainly appears as if Bruce is determined to keep the midfielder where he is. We have heard for a long time now that United are interested in bringing Longstaff to Old Trafford. However, no tangible progress has seemingly been made between the two teams. A change in manager has taken place at St James’ Park, but Bruce appears to be just as committed to retaining Longstaff as his predecessor no doubt was. His stance on this particular situation, then, provides a tiny glimmer of light in what is a very dark period for the Newcastle supporters.
