Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has flown in to meet Steve Bruce for more transfer talks this lunchtime, according to the Chronicle.

The Sports Direct magnate is understood to have arrived at Benton by helicopter on Wednesday, and held more talks with his new appointment over potential summer signings.

The Magpies completed their first deal of the transfer window with a club record move for Brazilian forward Joelinton on Tuesday, as reported by the BBC, and now have just 18 days to complete any further business.

OPINION

Mike Ashley appears to be intent on trying to make Rafa Benitez look as wrong as he possibly can this summer. After the Spaniard left Tyneside, citing a lack of ambition as one of the main reasons for his departure, the controversial owner seems to have gone on something of a charm offensive with his new appointment. Joelinton’s record signing is a big statement of intent, and his personal appearance at Benton would have been all but unimaginable during the Benitez tenure. Will it be enough for fans to forgive and forget, however? Probably not, and certainlyyou would hope not. If the Toon Army are going to forget their principles and their fury every time Ashley forks out on a new player then they only have themselves to blame if he stays. In all honesty though, this time it feels as if things a way, way beyond being anywhere near repairable.
