Newcastle United are surely arrogant to be confident that they can lure Steven Gerrard away from Rangers given that they’re looking to make an appointment towards the end of next week.
The Northern Echo reported on Thursday that the Magpies are confident they can persuade Gerrard to leave Ibrox to be their next manager if they decide to offer him the job.
The newspaper claim that Newcastle managing director Lee Charnley is aiming to finalise his shortlist in the next two days, with the Rangers manager viewed as a viable option, as the current view is to have Rafa Benitez’s replacement by the end of next week.
Given this tight timeframe, and the fact Charnley hasn’t even finished his shortlist yet, surely the Magpies are arrogant to be confident that they can get Gerrard to agree to leave Rangers in swift fashion after all the work he has put in.
As they must think Gerrard will be easy to convince to join if they are considering him an option despite wanting a swift appointment based on this report.
Gerrard will surely want time to weigh up his future as it’s not a clear-cut decision.
The Rangers boss is currently in Portugal for the club’s summer training camp already trying to get his side ready for the next season considering their Europa League qualification campaign kicks-off in July.
Gerrard has no doubt started his preparations for next season already for that reason, and he has already worked hard to welcome the players he thinks will improve the squad.
The Gers have already technically signed George Edmundson, Jordan Jones, Greg Stewart, Steven Davies, Jake Hastie, Joe Aribo and Sheyi Ojo; which no doubt took him some work.
Also with the Magpies being confident, they’re totally disregarding that the Gers will fight to keep their manager.
Rangers have backed Gerrard in the transfer market already and have him under contract until 2022, so they’re not going to roll over when it comes to the Magpies wanting to speak to their manager, and negotiating with them will surely take some time.
So while Gerrard does deserve to be considered for the Magpies’ job, he has averaged 1.89 points per man at Ibrox after all, the Premier League side are arrogant to see him as an attainable option given their tight time frame.
