Newcastle United have not made any offers to any managers as a plan B should Rafa Benitez fail to agree to a new deal on Tyneside.

The Spaniard has yet to put pen to paper on a new contract at St. James’ Park, despite the fact that his current one expires on June 30th.

But, speaking to the Chronicle, reliable journalist Waugh claimed that the Magpies are yet to put a contingency plan in place.

He said: “Have they approached someone?

“My understanding is that they haven’t, or they haven’t done so firmly as of yet.”

OPINION

There are two ways to read this one really. On the one hand, if Newcastle aren’t planning for a replacement, that could mean that they believe Benitez will still be at the helm next season. On the other, given how incompetent the ownership clearly is at St. James’ Park, it would be no surprise if they were just planning to soldier on without any replacement in mind. If that is the case, and if Benitez is allowed to leave, there will surely be mutinies on Tyneside. The hope will be that it never comes to that, of course, and you can’t help feeling that the Spaniard loves the club too much to leave it in the lurch, but with Ashley at the wheel, who knows what could happen. All that is certain is that this next fortnight is going to be a very, very tetchy affair up in the north east.
