Time to bin Aarons at last

Newcastle United winger Rolando Aarons has been one of the biggest flops St James’ Park has seen in recent years – and that’s saying something.

So much was expected of the 23-year-old after he burst onto the scene all those years ago, but he has massively underwhelmed and will likely be consigned to the Magpies history books in short order.

Indeed, The Chronicle reported on Saturday that another loan exit, if not a permanent sale, is in the offing for the Englishman this summer.

Forget about another loan spell, we’ve been there and done that, it’s time for Newcastle to cut the cord with Aarons over the course of this transfer window. That’s no disrespect to the player himself, but he has long since exhausted his usefulness to Rafael Benitez and must be moved on as a result.

Aarons’s stock is unlikely to ever be as high as it is right now. He is coming off the finest loan period of his career, where he excelled under the tutelage of Steve Bruce at Championship side Sheffield Wednesday.

It’s likely that the Owls will at least consider making a permanent move for him this summer, but if they don’t Newcastle should still be able to find someone to take Aarons off their hands as long as they don’t demand an outlandish sum for him – which you wouldn’t expect them to do given that they are aiming to get rid of him.

Some supporters may still hold out hope for an Aarons revival, but Benitez sure doesn’t. It seems like the only chance of Aarons remaining on Tyneside is if the Spaniard departs this summer.

However, whoever is the manager at St James’ Park moving forward, they must offload Aarons once and for all this summer – the time has very much come.
