Bristol City have named their price Adam Webster after Newcastle United and other Premier League sides made contact over a potential swoop, according to teamTALK.

The online football outlet claimed on Monday night that Lee Johnson would accept any offers of £12million for the 24-year-old central defender.

teamTALK report that the Championship club are set to lose their marquee defender with Burnley, Leicester, Southampton, and Watford also interested in his signature.

Bristol City are reportedly ready to cash in on Webster, a month after selling young full-back Lloyd Kelly to Bournemouth for £13million.

The 24-year-old quickly became a mainstay in the south-west of England under Johnson, keeping 12 clean sheets in his 44 Championship appearances last season.

OPINION

This would be a hefty price to pay for Newcastle. There is no doubting that Webster has enjoyed a great season for Bristol City, with his involvement in 12 clean sheets speaking for themselves. This deal would not be money well spent by the Magpies, mainly due to the fact that the 24-year-old only arrived at the Championship club last summer for the slender fee of £3.5million. Bristol managed to earn £13million from the sale of Kelly, who offers much more potential than Webster, with his figure surely making clubs think twice this summer. This valuation could be seen as a tactic to scare clubs away from making a move for their main defender, and Newcastle should take the bait by looking elsewhere and count themselves lucky. With Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles having enjoyed brilliant seasons at St James’ Park, it would be hard to see where Webster fits in at the club – especially with Florian Lejeune expected to return from injury soon. The 24-year-old would no doubt play second string to those names, and a £12million fee is certainly not worth attempting to secure his signature.
