OPINION

Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar played the full 120 minutes as his Switzerland side were defeated on penalties after a goalless draw with England in their Nations League third place play-off clash in Portugal on Sunday. It was likely one of the dullest games that viewers have witnessed for a long, long time, but the 27-year-old provided a couple of interesting moments for the Magpies supporters, anyway. The first was when he almost scored a comical own goal. It would have been a disastrous moment for his country and for him personally, but he just about managed to avoid that infamous fate. More enjoyable, though, was his penalty in the shoot-out, which he thundered past Three Lions goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. The Everton shot-stopper is a former Sunderland player who grew up on Wearside, so he’s not universally loved at St James’ Park. That fact was borne out in the Newcastle fans’ reaction to Schar scoring past him on Sunday.
