Manchester United are set to make an official bid for Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff, according to the Evening Standard.

The newspaper claim on their website that the Red Devils are preparing an imminent offer to potentially take advantage of Rafael Benitez leaving the club this week.

Journalist James Robson wrote on the Evening Standard’s live blog (26/06, 12:00 pm): “United are set to make an official bid for Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff imminently.”

Manchester United were reported by the Manchester Evening News to have held talks with the 21-year-old’s representatives in June, with the discussions being all positive.

Longstaff was given his full debut for the Magpies by Benitez last season, with the Spaniard’s departure giving the Premier League giants hope in their pursuit of the midfielder.

OPINION

Could this week get any worse for all Newcastle fans? First, their beloved former manager Benitez is confirmed to be leaving St James’ Park, and now he could be followed to the exit door by one of their brightest young talents in Longstaff. The 21-year-old was one of the big positives in the previous campaign, after becoming a mainstay in the team after impressing in his debut. Injury cut his first season short, but the English starlet should return for pre-season, the only question that is left, is which club will he arrive for training at? Longstaff averaged the most dribbles per game in the whole Newcastle squad with 1.7 [WhoScored] and quickly became an integral part of their spine. He formed a great partnership with Isaac Hayden, another player who reportedly wants to leave the club. Now would be the perfect time to strike for Manchester United, with no manager in place to confirm any possible exits, the next couple of weeks could get even worse for the Magpies.
