Andy Goldstein has launched an attack on Mike Ashley, identifying him as the biggest problem at Newcastle United

The talkSPORT host spoke about Ashley and urged the Magpies’ owner to sell the club quickly before ruining the progress of Rafael Benitez at St James’ Park.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Goldstein said: “Mike Ashley for my money is the problem at the club. Who on earth are they going to get? What manager is going to go there knowing the struggle he’s got on his hands?

“Just sell the club. Sell it cause you’re ruining it, it’s not your club. The club’s going backwards. The club will be there long after he’s gone, it was there before he came along. He’s just a tenant.”

This comes the day after it was confirmed on Newcastle’s official club website that Benitez will leave the club once his contract expires at the end of June.

Ashley has been reported by the Sun to be in talks with the Bin Zayed Group over a proposed takeover, a deal that has yet to be completed.

OPINION

Goldstein has simply reiterated the point which every Newcastle fan will want this summer. One of the main priorities from the Magpies’ faithful was that the club secured Benitez to a new deal in the North East, something that failed to materialise after weeks of agonising talks between the two parties. The next priority would have been for Ashley to complete his deal with the Bin Zayed Group, and leave the club. The owner has not been liked by the Newcastle fans to say the least during his spell at the club – with the rebranding of the stadium being followed by the consistency to fail to spend money during transfer windows year after year. The arrival of club-record signing Miguel Almiron in January would have put hope into the Newcastle fans, something that will have been drained out of them with the consistent stream of bad news which seems to be coming their way in the past few weeks.
