Real Salt Lake winger Jefferson Savarino is an affordable target for Newcastle United regardless of whether or not Mike Ashley sells the Tyneside club this summer, according to the Shields Gazette.

The newspaper claims that the Magpies are keeping close tabs on the 22-year-old as he represents Venezuela, alongside ex-Toon ace Salomon Rondon, at the Copa America.

It is understood that Savarino could be available for £6million this summer, which is “well within” Newcastle’s transfer budget.

OPINION

Newcastle have other priorities at the moment, but it is a good job that they still have scouts keeping watch over potential summer signings because whoever is in charge or is owner, come next month will need to have some idea about who he can add to the squad. Savarino has had a decent start to the 2019 season with MLS side Real Salt Lake. He has scored three goals and supplied two assists in 13 MLS appearances for the Utah outfit, which is not bad for a right-sided winger. Newcastle would not have seen much of the Venezuelan on Wednesday if they scouted him because he was an unused substitute in the 0-0 draw against Brazil at the Copa America. Rondon did start up front though so at least the Magpies scout would have been able to cast his eye over the West Brom forward ahead of a potential swoop this summer.
