Salomon Rondon has told friends that he favours a move to Newcastle United this summer, according to the Mirror’s print edition (June 18th, p.48), as quoted by sister publication the Chronicle.

The Venezuelan spent last season on loan at St. James’ Park, scoring 12 goals and assisting seven more in all competitions.

And while West Ham are also understood to be keen on the striker, as reported by Football.London, the Mirror claims that the South American favours a return to Tyneside.

As quoted in the Chronicle, the report said: “The Venezuelan has told friends he wants to join the Magpies on a permanent basis.”

OPINION

This is surely a promising sign for Newcastle United. Rondon immediately endeared himself to fans last season with his goalscoring exploits and his selfless work ethic, and the vast majority would surely love to see him back on Tyneside next term. Because West Brom have set their price at £16.5 million, there will no doubt be a number of sides in for Rondon. In today’s market, that kind of money is pretty much nothing, and the definite figure means that there is no need to haggle over price. If that is the case then, and if numerous sides do bid for the forward, it will surely come down to his own personal preference as to where he ends up. Wages could still be a factor, of course, but judging by this report here, Newcastle could well be in the driving seat when it comes to the race for the South American’s services.
