Greek heavyweights Panathinaikos have made contact with Newcastle United over a loan move for winger Rolando Aarons, according to SDNA.

The Greek outlet claims that Giorgos Donis’s side are in talks with the Magpies over a temporary swoop for the 23-year-old.

However, they want Newcastle to pay a portion of the player’s wages. Aarons has had a number of loan spells away from St James’ Park, most recently a productive stop-off at Championship side Sheffield Wednesday.

OPINION

ANOTHER loan spell for Aarons – really? How many times are we going to do this? The youngster has already had several spells away from Tyneside and has never quite done enough to earn a permanent move away from the club. It’s clear that he is never going to make the impact at Newcastle that we all thought he would when he first came onto the scene. He was one of the most exciting young players to have emerged from St James’ Park in many years. However, it’s clearly all gone awry. To be fair to him, he actually did pretty well with Wednesday. It’s a slight surprise that Steve Bruce hasn’t made another move for him this summer. Obviously you’d ideally want to shift Aarons permanently, but if that can’t be achieved then the Magpies will have to content themselves with another loan spell. Panathinaikos is as good a place as any, and probably better than Aarons deserves at this stage of his career.
