Newcastle United head of recruitment Steve Nickson has been jetting out to youth tournaments across the globe in a bid to unearth undiscovered talent for the Magpies, according to the Chronicle.

United are yet to sign anybody this summer, but it is understood that there is a heavy emphasis being placed on finding good young talent to help save the club money.

The report from the local outlet claims: “Newcastle have been targeting youth tournaments and the idea is to unearth untapped talent which could save the club money in the long run.

“With the African Cup of Nations, the Copa America and the European Under-21 Championships taking place at the moment, all of the competitions are being monitored.”

OPINION

This just isn’t good enough from Newcastle. When will Mike Ashley learn that he cannot keep cutting corners and expect to get the kind of positive results that Rafa Benitez has been churning out. The fact that the controversial businessman has been in charge of the club since 2007 and only saw fit to break their longstanding transfer record, a record that preceded his tenure, in January, is indication enough of just how poor his commitment to investment has been. Make no mistake, jetting out across the globe to try and nab the next big thing on the cheap is not something that should be criticised, but when that policy is the cornerstone of a club’s recruitment strategy, it hints at a board who are desperate to get an adequate output from minimum input. The Magpies deserve better and the sooner that Ashley sells up and gets out of town, the better for everybody involved.
