Newcastle United want to hand young goalkeeper Freddie Woodman a new contract with the club, according to The Chronicle.

The newspaper claims that the Magpies are willing to offer the 22-year-old fresh terms in a bid to keep him in the north east beyond when his current deal expires next summer.

However, Woodman himself is thought to be demanding assurances over his future and his chances of getting regular playing time in the years to come.

At the moment his lack of football has led to a contract impasse that continues to rumble on.

OPINION

We all know that Woodman wants to play football and has done for some time. He’s been keen to go out on loan and get some playing time before returning to St James’ Park and challenging for a first team spot, but he hasn’t been allowed to do that for a while now. That’s led to great frustration on the ‘keeper’s part and has him questioning whether he wants to remain on Tyneside moving forward. He’s getting to the age now where he really needs to play regular football – or have a chance of doing so in the future – or move on. From Newcastle’s perspective, though, they should be telling him what he wants to hear and incorporating him into their first team plans. He is the future between the sticks for the Magpies, so it would be bizarre to let him leave because you’re not willing to give him the assurances he needs.
