Newcastle United are looking at raiding newly promoted Norwich City for promising goalkeeper Jon McCracken this summer, according to Football Insider.

The reputable football news outlet claim on their website that the Magpies have set their sights on the highly rated 19-year-old shot stopper to give Rafael Benitez added options between the sticks.

It is stated that McCracken, who is yet to play for the Canaries’ first team having been Daniel Farke’s third choice keeper in their Championship winning campaign, will be allowed to leave Carrow Road for free as he looks for a move to further his career.

There is said to be plenty of demand in the Scotland under-17 international from both England and Scotland.

Opinion

With Rafael Benitez’s future still very much up in the air it seems unlikely there will be any new signings made before he either puts pen to paper on a new deal or a new manager is put in place to replace the Spaniard. However, with McCracken said to be available to sign for nothing more than his wages, this could be one the Newcastle board green light whether or not the former Liverpool boss stays on board at St James’ Park. They are always in the market for a bargain deal, courtesy of Mike Ashley’s lack of spending, and the Norwich man ticks the necessary boxes for the Magpies in that he is young with plenty of potential. Regardless of whether he comes in and plays in the first team for Newcastle, he could help the Magpies make a profit in the future and with Ashley still in charge, that is still going to be the club’s philosophy when it comes to new signings. With Martin Dubravka still very much the first choice in goal, McCracken’s chances of senior football are unlikely to improve on Tyneside, so there will have to be some convincing if he is to make the move to the north east..
