Newcastle United are set to miss out on long-term target Nikola Vlasic, according to the Northern Echo.

The newspaper claims that the Everton attacker, 21, is on the verge of a £14million switch to CKSA Moscow as the Magpies have failed to table an offer for him this summer.

It is understood that Rafa Benitez has been an admirer of the Croatian ace and Everton were anticipating a formal approach from the Tyneside club.

However it would appear that the uncertainty that has surrounded Benitez’s future and Newcastle’s ownership has had a detrimental impact on their business in the early stages of this summer transfer window.

OPINION

Vlasic might not have been an amazing signing for Newcastle, but he could have been someone who Mike Ashley and Benitez would have agreed upon snapping this summer. Ashley only really likes to sign players who are young and have the potential to be sold on for a profit and as reported by the Echo, Benitez is a fan of the Croatia international. Vlasic was in great form while on loan at CSKA Moscow last season as he scored eight goals – one of which came against Real Madrid in the Champions League – and supplied seven assists in 31 appearances across all competitions. Vlasic is someone who can play out on the right-wing or in an attacking midfield position in the centre, so his versatility could have come in handy at St James’ Park next season if the Toon were able to sign him. However he has now slipped through the fingers of Benitez, which will not make the Spanish boss very happy as uncertainty plagues his future at St James’ Park.
